VIDEO: ‘Caught Off Guard’ – Nigerian Lawmaker Seconds Motion She Knew Nothing About

House of Reps1

The lawmaker representing Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency, Maureen Chinwe Gwacham, has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video showing her unable to explain a motion she seconded on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The footage, which sparked widespread reactions on social media, captured the legislator seconding a motion but appearing unable to provide details when prompted, raising concerns about legislative participation.

In a statement issued on the matter, Gwacham, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, said she was taken by surprise during the plenary session.

According to her, she had just returned to her seat when she was called upon to second the motion without prior notice.

She explained that the unexpected call contributed to her inability to immediately outline the content of the motion.

The lawmaker clarified that the motion was moved by Muktar Tolani Shagaya and centred on the urgent deployment of Automated External Defibrillators in public institutions.

The proposal, she said, is aimed at preventing avoidable deaths by ensuring access to emergency life-saving equipment.

Gwacham added that her decision to second the motion was based on confidence in the credibility of its sponsor rather than detailed prior knowledge of its contents.

Reacting to the criticism that followed the viral clip, the lawmaker expressed appreciation to her constituents for their concern.

She reaffirmed her commitment to her legislative responsibilities and representation, noting that the incident does not reflect her dedication to duty.
