THE ancient town of Umuoji will come alive on Sunday, April 5, as its central administrative body, the Umuoji Improvement Union of Nigeria (UIUN), will celebrate 100 years of organised community development, leadership, and service to the people.
Founded in 1926 by a group of visionary and forward-looking young Umuoji indigenes led by the late Leo Okoji Anyaegbunam, the union has, for a century, served as the administrative backbone of the community, providing leadership, coordinating development efforts, and fostering unity among the people at home and in the diaspora.
The centenary celebration is being organised by the current leadership of the Union under Ifeanyi Muoemenam (Ichie Chinechendo Umuoji), in conjunction with the Igwe-in-Council under the regency of Chris O. Nnedu (Odezuluigbo Umuoji).
As part of the celebration, the Union will honour distinguished sons and daughters of Umuoji whose contributions have significantly impacted the development of the community and the wider society.
According to the programme released by the Union, the celebration will commence with a Holy Mass at Our Lady’s Catholic Church, Abidi, Umuoji, at 9:00 a.m. This will be followed by a grand civic reception at the Chief Silas Onyima Memorial Stadium, Umuoji, at 12 noon.
The event is expected to attract Umuoji indigenes from across Nigeria and the diaspora, as well as friends and associates of the community, making it one of the largest gatherings in the town’s recent history.
The National Publicity Secretary (Public Relations Officer) of the Union, Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu, described the centenary as a celebration of “100 years of unity, development, and collective progress,” and invited all sons and daughters of Umuoji and the general public to be part of the historic occasion.
For many indigenes, the centenary is not just a celebration of the past, but also a moment of reflection on the journey so far and a renewed commitment to the continued growth and development of Umuoji.
