Former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that the current administration of President Bola Tinubu does not protect the interests of all religions in the country.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Amechi spoke on Friday during a chat with Channels Television.
Expressing scepticism about Tinubu’s victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election in 2022, Amaechi faulted Tinubu’s ideology on religious matters, stressing that society deserves a balance.
He said, “On the first day, they said President Tinubu had won the APC primary; I told him I didn’t agree.
“Why is that said? There is a balance in every society, and that balance is that you must protect all religious interests in the society.
“I don’t see the current administration protecting the interests of all religions in the country. You must allow all regions and tribes to know that they belong to this country.”
Recall that President Tinubu contested the 2023 election with the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who is a Muslim.
Meanwhile, Amaechi has declared that he doesn’t agree with the option of choosing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election by consensus.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Friday, the former Governor of Rivers State said the people must be allowed to make their choice.
He, however, added that he is ready to support whoever eventually emerges as the ADC presidential candidate, but prefers that the party should hold a primary election.
Amaechi made his position known while reacting to an earlier statement by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who stated that the ADC would first explore the chances of choosing its flagbearer through a consensus.
