Three soldiers have been killed after suspected terrorists attacked a military camp in Kemanji community, Kaiama LGA of Kwara State, in the latest security breach in the area.
Residents said the assault happened in the early hours of Monday, when heavy gunfire was heard across the community as the attackers stormed the camp.
According to local sources, the gunmen launched the raid without warning and engaged troops in a fierce exchange of fire.
The attack reportedly left three soldiers dead before reinforcements responded and pushed back the assailants.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, said the attackers took advantage of the early morning hours when some personnel were asleep.
“Kemanji is a border community close to thick forest areas.
“Few of the soldiers were asleep around 3am when the terrorists invaded their camp and killed three of them before others responded,”the source said.
Kemanji is located near forest corridors that have increasingly raised security concerns because of their difficult terrain and access routes.
There was no immediate official statement from the military or Kwara State authorities at the time of filing this report.
The latest incident is expected to heighten concerns over renewed attacks on security formations and communities in parts of the North Central region.
