Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State convened a high-level security meeting with former governors and key stakeholders in a renewed effort to tackle the persistent wave of violence across the state.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the meeting comes amid renewed attacks in parts of Plateau, which have left scores dead and properties destroyed, further deepening concerns over the fragile security situation in the North-Central state.
The meeting may not be unconnected to the recent attack on Anguwan Rukuba and the ensuing violence in surrounding communities, where dozens of residents were reportedly killed.
The latest incidents are part of a troubling pattern of attacks that have plagued Plateau for years, with hundreds of people, including women and children, losing their lives in recurring cycles of violence.
The closed-door meeting, held at the Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, brought together prominent political figures, including former governors Simon Bako Lalong, Jonah David Jang, and Joshua Chibi Dariye.
Also present was a former military administrator of the state, Rear Admiral Samuel Bitrus Atukum (retd.), alongside other critical stakeholders.
Governor Mutfwang, in a statement shared via his verified Facebook page on Thursday, said the deliberations centred on both security and the broader welfare of Plateau residents.
He said, “The closed-door session extensively deliberated on issues affecting the well-being, welfare, and overall development of Plateau people, with particular focus on the recent wave of violent attacks in rural communities.”
According to Daily Trust, sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that participants undertook a comprehensive review of the security situation, expressing deep concern over the sustained loss of lives and destruction of property.
The stakeholders reportedly resolved to adopt a united approach towards addressing the crisis, with emphasis on promoting lasting peace and strengthening unity among residents.
They also agreed on the need to encourage harmonious coexistence across communities and ensure justice for victims of the attacks.
In addition, the leaders resolved to establish robust frameworks aimed at addressing the root causes of the violence, anchored on the values of courage, discipline, and patriotism long associated with Plateau State.
