Prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso, attended the National Convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday in Abuja.
The convention, which took place at the Rainbow Events Centre, attracted more than 3,000 delegates and political stakeholders as the party intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Among the notable attendees at the event were former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola and the National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark.
The convention, themed “So the Nation May Work,” focused on strengthening internal unity within the party and outlining strategies ahead of the 2027 polls.
Party leaders also discussed plans to restructure the party’s leadership framework and conclude pending state congresses.
As part of the convention agenda, the party is expected to elect a new National Working Committee and address unresolved organisational issues across states.
Accreditation of delegates continued throughout the day as participants arrived from different parts of the country.
Security was also heightened around the venue to ensure a smooth conduct of the event.
The convention proceeded despite earlier challenges surrounding venue arrangements.
Party officials had earlier alleged that access to preferred venues such as Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium was denied, which they claimed was an attempt to frustrate the gathering.
The event also took place amid a leadership dispute within the party, with rival factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe laying claim to the party’s leadership.
Following the internal crisis and ongoing court cases, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended formal recognition of either faction pending judicial determination of the dispute.
The ADC was adopted in July 2025 as a coalition platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
