The South-West leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Seyi Makinde has dismissed reports of an alleged impeachment plot against the Oyo State governor, describing the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the party’s Zonal Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, made this known on Monday during a press briefing at the party’s zonal headquarters, Adagunodo House, in Ibadan.
Atofarati said there was no impeachment process against Makinde, stressing that the reports were fabricated to create unnecessary tension in the state.
He said, “The reports are baseless and contrived. They formed part of a calculated attempt to generate unnecessary political tension.”
The alleged plot had recently gained attention amid concerns raised by some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly over developments within the legislature, with lawmakers distancing themselves from any such move.
The development also drew in key political and traditional figures, including the Speaker of the Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.
Other personalities linked to the controversy include Florence Ajimobi.
The situation was further heightened by comments from the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, who alleged that there were plans by Makinde’s administration to target Oba Ladoja.
Fayose, in a post on his 𝕏 handle, maintained that recent developments were being interpreted as part of a broader agenda involving the monarch.
However, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes stated on Sunday that the matter had been resolved amicably, easing tensions surrounding the issue.
Reacting, the PDP South-West leadership criticised Fayose’s remarks, describing them as detrimental to public discourse and capable of inciting unrest.
Atofarati said, “Irresponsible and self-serving, capable of inciting tension, particularly through the needless politicisation of revered traditional institutions. Such conduct is unacceptable and stands condemned.”
He urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, warning against “disgruntled political actors” allegedly seeking to create instability for personal political gain.
The zonal leadership reaffirmed its support for Makinde, commending his administration for governance and democratic consolidation.
Atofarati said, “Makinde has shown stability, focus, and an unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends, while also playing a significant role in sustaining and strengthening multi-party democracy in Nigeria.”
The party reiterated its commitment to providing what it described as a people-oriented alternative focused on stability and development.
It stated, “The South West Zonal Executive Committee unequivocally identifies with and stands firmly behind Governor Makinde, whose leadership continues to exemplify stability, focus, and commitment to the welfare of the people.
“Nigerians must not lose faith in democratic institutions despite present difficulties. PDP remains resolute in its commitment to people-focused governance, stability, and national progress.”
The leadership also reaffirmed its loyalty to the party’s National Working Committee under Tanimu Turaki.
