Abdulsamad Jamiu, a corps member, was murdered during a military operation at Shagari Estate in Dei-Dei, Abuja. The National Youth Service Corps has expressed its grief over his passing.
The program verified that Jamiu was working at Government Junior Secondary School in Bakin Ado, Nasarawa State, in a statement sent on Monday via its official X feed.
The NYSC further stated that prior to his tragic passing, the deceased was actively advancing national development through his principal responsibility.
The statement said, “The National Youth Service Corps’ management extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Corps Member Abdulsamad Jamiu.”
The NYSC described the occurrence as unfortunate and stated that it was working with pertinent security agencies to ascertain the operation’s conditions.
The NYSC management is deeply saddened and concerned about this situation. According to the statement, “The scheme is actively engaging with relevant security agencies to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The organization reiterated its dedication to the security and well-being of Corps members nationwide while expressing its profound condolences for the loss.
“The program reaffirms its commitment to the safety, security, and welfare of all corps members and staff across the nation, even though this incident is extremely regretful. In order to reduce threats and improve protection across the country, efforts will continue to be intensified in cooperation with security and intelligence services.
The statement read, “The NYSC stands in solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult time and prays for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased.”
According to PUNCH Online, the Nigerian Army’s Guards Brigade headquarters stated that the dead was killed in crossfire during a gunfight with alleged armed thieves.
Odunola Olawuyi, the Brigade’s spokeswoman, stated in a statement last Sunday that when troops reacted to a distress call regarding an armed robbery, they were fired upon by escaping suspects.
The fleeing armed criminals opened fire on the troops upon arrival, sparking a brief but fierce altercation. Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire during the engagement, according to the statement.
He called the event “tragic,” noting that although attempts were made to secure the area and save the locals, Jamiu eventually passed away from his wounds.
On Monday, a Nigerian Army mission paid the family a visit to express condolences and examine the scene of the tragedy.
The deceased’s father and his family, however, disagree with the army’s version, stating that “physical evidence disproves an exchange of gunfire.”
