Confusion has once again surrounded the second round of Iran–US talks, even as the White House confirmed that discussions are expected to take place in Islamabad over the weekend. While the United States appears ready to move forward, Iran has publicly denied that any direct meeting is planned.
Is an Iran–US meeting really happening in Islamabad?
The White House said that President Donald Trump is sending envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan’s capital for talks. According to press secretary Karoline Leavitt, both officials will leave on Saturday morning to continue discussions with Iran.
However, Iran has rejected these claims. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated clearly that no meeting with the US is planned. He said Iran would instead share its views with Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator.

Why is Abbas Araghchi visiting Pakistan?
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Friday. According to Iranian officials, his visit is part of a broader diplomatic effort to discuss regional developments and push for peace.
Pakistan confirmed that Araghchi was received by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Army Chief Asim Munir. During his visit, Araghchi is expected to meet top leadership and discuss ways to reduce tensions in the region.
Reports suggest that this visit is also part of a multi-nation tour, with stops planned in Oman and Russia. Sources say Iran may use Pakistan to pass on its proposals to the US indirectly.
What is the US saying about the talks?
The White House remains optimistic. Karoline Leavitt said that the US has seen “some progress” from Iran in recent days and hopes that more progress can be made during the weekend.
She also revealed that Vice President JD Vance is on standby and could travel to Pakistan if needed. Interestingly, Leavitt claimed that Iran had reached out requesting an in-person meeting, a claim that contradicts Iran’s official stance.
