The Nigerian Navy and the South African Navy have strengthened bilateral relations following the successful conclusion of their maiden Naval Staff Talks held in Cape Town.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, on the outcome of the meeting which took place from April 12 to 18, 2026, at Naval Base Simon’s Town.
Rear Admiral AA Mustapha led the Nigerian delegation, while Rear Admiral S. Makhanya headed the South African team.
The statement said the engagement was a strategic initiative supported by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and his South African counterpart, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese.
According to the Navy, discussions focused on areas of mutual interest such as maritime domain awareness, joint training, operational collaboration and capacity development.
It said the talks are expected to yield practical outcomes that will strengthen joint efforts in tackling maritime threats, including piracy, illegal fishing and transnational organised crime.
The statement added that members of the Nigerian delegation visited the Institute of Maritime Technology and the South African Naval Museum as part of efforts to enhance knowledge exchange.
It further revealed that the South African Navy would participate in the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations slated for June 2026.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its commitment to partnerships that promote maritime security, regional stability and economic prosperity across Africa.
