THE Igbo Community Association, ICA FCT has raised alarm over what it described as Nigeria’s worsening security and economic situation, warning that the country is approaching a critical tipping point.
In a statement jointly signed by Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah, President General, ICA FCT and Secretary General respectively, the group criticised both the federal government and the opposition parties, accusing the latter of prioritising political interests over the plight of the ordinary Nigerians.
The association noted that while citizens continue to grapple with persistent power outages, rising poverty and insecurity, opposition figures have focused their energy on protesting issues surrounding the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, including the alleged call for the removal of its chairman.
Describing the development as “hypocrisy,” the ICA FCT noted that opposition parties have not shown the same level of urgency in responding to the killings in parts of the Middle Belt and other troubled regions.
“The silence in the face of bloodshed, contrasted with loud protests on electoral matters, raises serious concerns about the true priorities of the political class,” the statement said.
The President General of the association, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, stated that the hardship facing Nigerians has reached unprecedented levels.
“The people of Nigeria are truly suffering; times have never been this hard. Mothers are burying their children, and kidnappers parade openly without fear,” he said.
He added that even members of the armed forces have not been spared, alleging that senior military officers have been targeted by the bandits.
The group also directed strong criticism at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing current efforts to tackle insecurity and economic challenges as inadequate.
According to the ICA FCT, urgent and decisive action is needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
“We urge the President to go beyond current measures to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians,” the statement added.
The association calling on political leaders across party lines to put aside personal ambitions and prioritise national interest, warning that the continued politicisation of critical issues could have dire consequences for the country.
