A public affairs analyst and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Habib Dawanan, has alleged that Governor Abba Yusuf is under pressure to appoint Murtala Garo as deputy governor.
Dawanan made the claim in a recent statement, alleging that the Presidency under President Bola Tinubu was mounting pressure on the governor to make the appointment.
He described the alleged move as “a direct assault on the rule of law,” warning that elevating an embattled candidate to the position of deputy governor would amount to granting constitutional immunity and could stall ongoing criminal proceedings.
Dawanan said Garo’s possible nomination amounted to a “glaring double standard,” especially following the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam.
“It appears to be a calculated attempt to secure backdoor immunity for the accused,” the statement read.
He warned that such a move would “ridicule the office of the governor and compromise the integrity of the legislature.”
The APC chieftain urged President Tinubu to allow Yusuf to independently choose a deputy governor without interference.
According to him, the independence of the governor in making such a decision is critical to protecting institutions and the rule of law.
“The soul of governance and sanctity of institutions must remain paramount,” he said.
The allegation comes after Yusuf left the New Nigeria Peoples Party for the APC, a move that led to the resignation of Aminu Abdulsalam as deputy governor.
The unfolding situation has continued to fuel political permutations in Kano over who emerges as the state’s next deputy governor.
