The Federal Government has clarified that the April 11, 2026 airstrike on the Jilli axis in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State was a targeted counter-terrorism operation based on verified intelligence.
In a statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government stated that the operation was conducted by the Nigerian Air Force under Operation HADIN KAI.
“The Federal Government reiterates that this was a deliberate, intelligence-led operation, not an indiscriminate attack, conducted in one of the most active insurgent corridors in the North-East,” he said.
The statement described the Jilli axis, also known as “Kasu Daulaye,” as a long-standing террорист enclave used by Boko Haram and ISWAP for logistics and operational coordination.
According to the minister, the operation followed sustained intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, which confirmed the presence of террорист elements before the strike was executed.
He noted that intelligence findings were further corroborated by the arrest of a 15-year-old ISWAP courier in Ngamdu on April 12, who admitted transporting funds and supplies linked to the Jilli network.
The government expressed condolences to affected families.
“Every Nigerian life is sacred, and any loss of civilian life is deeply regretted,” the minister stated.
He added that Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, had confirmed that Jilli and Gazabure markets were shut down about five years ago due to insurgent control.
The Federal Government disclosed that a full and independent investigation has been ordered.
“This will review intelligence, targeting, and execution, and we will address any gaps and ensure accountability where necessary,” the statement said.
The government also called for responsible journalism.
“In times of crisis, unverified reporting can mislead the public, embolden terrorists, and undermine national efforts,” it warned.
It reaffirmed its commitment to defeating terrorism, noting that the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, recently announced 386 терроризм-related convictions out of 508 cases.
