THE Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Anambra State Branch, has extended warm commendation to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Sly Ezeokenwa, for his compassionate Easter visit to the inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Awka, describing the gesture as a rare demonstration of selfless leadership and genuine empathy for the forgotten in the society.
According to the CLO, Ezeokenwa’s action reflects his “natural inclination to put smiles on the faces of the needy, especially those who can never pay him back,”_ a virtue, which distinguishes him as a leader with conscience.
During the visit, Ezeokenwa donated a wide range of essential items to the inmates, including foodstuffs, cartons of detergents, tissue papers, bathing soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes, slippers and other personal care supplies.
In a further demonstration of his commitment to the rehabilitation and human capital development, he pledged to fully sponsor the examination fees of 37 inmate-students currently enrolled in educational programmes within the facility.
The CLO described this as evidence of his “unwavering love for education and steadfast commitment to the welfare, reformation and reintegration of inmates into the society.”
In a joint statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Chairman, Vincent Ezekwueme and Secretary, Chidi Mbah, the CLO declared: “The acid test of politics is not what you say while hustling for power, but what you do when you attain it.”
The Organisation praised Ezeokenwa for shattering the cynical perception that _“one cannot be active in politics and remain honest and transparent.”
“Sly Ezeokenwa is God-fearing, honest and a man of impeccable character and integrity. He is evidently continuing the legacy of morality, compassion, integrity, and selflessness bequeathed by his late father, Sir Sylvester Ezeokenwa Snr, the Eze Udo of Umuchu,” the statement said.
The CLO noted that with this visit, Ezeokenwa has etched his name in the hearts of the inmates, the leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service and Nigerians at large — joining the league of humanitarians like His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese.
Archbishop Okeke, the group recalled, has consistently demonstrated unparalleled love, empathy, and compassion for prisoners by celebrating Easter, his birthday, and New Year with them annually — a commitment that earned him recognition from the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service as the Grand Patron and Spiritual Leader of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The CLO therefore appealed to other political leaders, captains of industry and public-spirited individuals to emulate Ezeokenwa’s example, reminding them of the immortal words of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta: _“One has not lived until he lives for others.”
