Senator Ayo Adeseun, a former lawmaker and senior member of the All Progressives Congress, has resigned from his role as Mayegun of Ogbomosho land.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the decision comes after his suspension by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Olaoye Ghandi, was not lifted.
Adeseun said he could not continue in the position due to what he called the Soun’s heavy-handed leadership and policies that divided the people of Ogbomoso.
He criticized the Oba for creating tension among residents through religious and political actions.
Adeseun also mentioned ongoing court matters involving the Chief Imam, stating that these issues should be settled legally rather than by palace interference.
In his resignation letter dated March 31, 2026, Adeseun recalled that Oba Olaoye had engaged in conflicts with other traditional rulers and community leaders, disrupting local organizations and attacking individuals who had contributed to the town’s development.
He argued that these actions went against the peaceful traditions of Ogbomosoland.
Oba Olaoye had earlier suspended Adeseun indefinitely from the Mayegun title in a letter dated March 23, 2026.
The palace cited insubordination, persistent disrespect, and disregard for the authority of the throne as reasons for the suspension, stressing that the action was necessary to maintain the dignity of the traditional institution.
Adeseun said he would not engage further with the Soun and believes that respect for the rule of law should guide the resolution of disputes in Ogbomosoland.
