THE All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticized Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over comments he made during the gathering of opposition politicians in Ibadan on Saturday.
In a statement released on Sunday, and signed by Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of APC accused Gov. Makinde of invoking the memory of Operation Wetie in a way that could stir unrest.
Describing his remarks as dangerous and unbecoming of a sitting governor, the APC said that it found the reference troubling, especially given Nigeria’s history, warning that such rhetoric coming from a state governor could inflame tensions and threaten public peace.
“It is reckless,” the party said in part, arguing that Makinde’s position as chief security officer of Oyo State places a higher responsibility on him to promote stability rather than make statements that could be interpreted as a call to violence.
The ruling party urged security agencies to pay close attention to the development, noting that comments of that nature should not be taken lightly in the current political climate.
It also pushed back against claims by opposition figures that the country is sliding into a one-party state, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy remains open and competitive.
According to the APC, the opposition’s struggles are largely self-inflicted, stemming from internal disagreements and leadership crises.
The statement went further to criticise prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, linking them to the instability within their parties and ongoing coalition efforts while reiterating its confidence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to governance under President Bola Tinubu, saying that it remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions and delivering on its agenda and maintained that Nigerians would ultimately judge parties based on performance and clear policy direction.
