The All Progressives Congress has postponed the date for the presidential primary election from May 15 and 16, to May 23, 2026.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the change was announced on Thursday in Abuja by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, after a meeting of the National Working Committee.
He said the presidential primary will now take place on May 23, 2026, while the governorship primary has been fixed for May 21, 2026.
He explained that the party reviewed its earlier timetable and made adjustments, including changes to the screening of aspirants and the handling of appeals. The screening exercise, which was initially planned for early May, has been rescheduled but will still cover all positions, including state and federal legislative seats, governorship, and the presidency.
Under the updated plan, the sale of nomination forms is set to begin on April 25 and end on May 2, 2026. Aspirants are expected to submit completed forms by May 4. Screening for various positions will follow shortly after, with results to be released on May 11. Appeals arising from the screening process will be handled between May 12 and May 13.
Primary elections for different offices will take place on separate dates. The House of Representatives primaries are scheduled for May 15, Senate primaries on May 18, and State House of Assembly primaries on May 20. Governorship primaries will hold on May 21, while the presidential primary comes last on May 23.
Appeals after the primaries will also be handled on different days, ending with the presidential appeals on May 25.
