The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kebbi State has said it stands to benefit from the internal crisis affecting opposition parties in the state.
The party’s spokesperson, Issa Abubakar-Asalafi, said the ongoing disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, could lead to further defections into the ruling party.
The PDP has recently witnessed high-profile defections, including its 2023 governorship candidate, Aminu Bande, who moved to the ADC.
Meanwhile, the ADC is grappling with factional disputes over its leadership in the state.
Abubakar-Asalafi said the APC is monitoring developments, noting that internal divisions within opposition parties could weaken their chances in future elections.
“Politics is a game of numbers, and parties must put their houses in order before challenging a ruling party,” he said.
He added that the APC remains confident of maintaining its dominance in Kebbi, expressing optimism that the party would secure a strong victory in the 2027 elections.
The APC spokesman also noted that all three senators elected under the PDP in Kebbi, along with members of the House of Representatives, have since defected to the ruling party.
He said the wave of defections reflects growing confidence in the APC’s leadership and governance in the state, adding that more politicians are expected to join the party ahead of the next general elections.
Abubakar-Asalafi further urged opposition parties to resolve their internal disputes, warning that continued disunity could undermine democratic competition and limit their chances at the polls.
