The Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has asserted that tribal sentiments or religion should not influence Nigerians’ decision to vote for him during the 2027 election.

PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Peter Obi made this known during an interview on ARISE Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme on Monday.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain maintained that Nigerians’ choice to vote for him should be based on his commitment to fixing the country.

He said, “I’ve said before do not vote for me because I’m from the South East. Do not vote for me because I am a Christian.

“Vote for me because I am committed to turning Nigeria around.

“And I will do it, starting from the North, because I know where the problem is.

“I will start bringing back the productivity that made the North safe.

“We will move the country from consumption to production. From sharing wealth to creating it.”

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has declared that he would speak out if choosing candidates for elections in the ADC becomes transactional, with tickets going to the highest bidder.

According to him, who people are today is more important than who they were yesterday.

The former Governor of Anambra State added that he would leave the ADC if the party’s processes were also compromised, arguing that he could never be involved in electoral fraud.

He stated this on Monday when he was challenged during an interview with Arise News on his political journey, which has seen him move across several parties.

The anchor pointed out that moving from one party to another instead of staying to fix the problems may affect Nigerians’ trust in him, probably due to perceived political inconsistency.

In response, Obi disclosed that he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election because the members were not playing by the rules, and getting a party ticket had become transactional.

“In PDP, people were not playing by the rules, it was transactional, and I can not be part of a transactional primary,” Obi declared
