Jack Harlow is facing backlash from music fans online after comments he made about his new album, Monica.
During a recent appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast, the 28-year-old rapper spoke about experimenting with a more R&B-influenced sound on the project. While discussing the creative direction of the album, Harlow made a remark that quickly began circulating across social media.
“I got Blacker,” Harlow said during the conversation while describing the musical path he chose for the record.
The statement drew swift reactions from fans, with many questioning the phrasing and debating what he meant. Some listeners expressed frustration online, arguing that labeling music as “Blacker” felt uncomfortable or unnecessary.
Others defended Harlow, saying they interpreted the remark as an acknowledgment of how deeply rooted R&B and soul traditions are in Black music culture.
In the same interview, Harlow explained that the album’s sound came from his personal taste rather than a calculated attempt to change genres. “I’m proud to say I made the decision off what feels good in my ear,” he said.
The Louisville native also spoke about his appreciation for R&B and melodic music. “I love the sound of soft, intimate, melodic music,” Harlow said while discussing the influences behind the album.
Harlow maintained that he still identifies strongly as a rapper while exploring new creative directions. “I’m focused on finding my voice,” he said.
