Chance the Rapper is taking the stand in an ongoing legal battle with his former manager, Patrick Corcoran, as a dispute over millions of dollars unfolds in Cook County, Illinois.
The case stems from a 2020 lawsuit in which Corcoran claims he was owed continued payments after the end of their professional relationship. He alleges the two had an agreement that included long-term compensation tied to Chance’s earnings.
During testimony on March 10, the Grammy-winning artist, born Chancelor Bennett, offered a different account of their arrangement.
“We never described it as a contract until he sued me,” Chance said in court. “We had an at-will agreement that didn’t address termination.”
He also said he was unaware of any provision requiring payments after their working relationship ended.
“We never discussed the sunset clause,” he testified. “We just discussed how I’d pay him.”
Chance told the court that he consistently paid Corcoran 15 percent of net proceeds while they worked together and estimated that the total amount reached millions over the years.
“One thing that stayed consistent is that I paid him his 15 percent,” he said.
The trial is expected to continue as both sides present their arguments in the contract dispute.
