Blake Fielder-Civil is opening up about his past relationship with Amy Winehouse and addressing long-standing perceptions about his role in her life.
In a recent appearance on the We Need to Talk podcast, Fielder-Civil reflected on their relationship and the years leading up to the singer’s death in 2011. He acknowledged his past struggles while pushing back on the idea that he alone is responsible for what happened. Their drug use was highly publicized at the time, and many blamed him for her addiction as many of her friends and loved ones tried desperately to help her get clean.
“My stance now is that I know people have an idea that Amy’s passing is my responsibility,” he said. “If I’ve done something, I’ll put my hand up to it.”
Fielder-Civil admitted he played a part in their shared struggles with addiction, but said it is important to recognize Winehouse’s independence. “Amy herself had agency,” he said. “She did what she wanted to do.”
The pair met in London in the early 2000s and went on to have a highly publicized relationship that inspired much of Winehouse’s music, including her album Back to Black. They married in 2007 and later divorced in 2009, though they remained in contact.
He also spoke about the emotional impact of losing her while he was incarcerated. “That was my best mate,” he said. “We were happy.”
Fielder-Civil added that he has worked toward sobriety and a more stable life. “I think she would want me to move forward,” he said, reflecting on how he believes Winehouse would view his life today.
