Xavier Smalls is addressing backlash after a resurfaced livestream clip sparked criticism over past comments about the LGBTQ+ community.
The Beauty in Black actor shared a public apology, saying he has taken time to reflect and listen. “After looking back at what I said, I had to really listen through different eyes and ears,” Smalls said. “I understand now why people felt judged.”
He continued, “I see how my approach lacked love, humility and awareness. That is not who I want to be.”
Smalls said conversations with friends, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, helped shift his perspective. “They corrected me in love,” he said. “They didn’t condemn me. They helped me understand the impact.”

“I learned about real experiences, about bullying and harm people face,” the Netflix star continued. “That changed how I see everything.”
Taking accountability, Smalls added, “The damage done outweighs my intent. I take full accountability. I truly regret that my words caused pain.”
He closed with a message about growth. “Every person deserves dignity and compassion,” he said. “I’m still learning. I will do better.”
“I’m truly sorry,” Smalls added.
