Kevin Gates opened up about surviving sexual assault as a child during a candid conversation with Shannon Sharpe on the latest episode of Club Shay Shay, reflecting on how the experience reshaped his life and his relationship with his children.
While revisiting a 2021 interview in which he first shared his story publicly, the rapper confirmed he was abused as a teenager. When Sharpe asked whether his abuser ever threatened him, Gates replied, “He did,” before adding, “Yeah, he outta here.”

After a brief pause, Sharpe moved carefully through the moment. When he asked about the man’s death, Gates repeated, “He outta here,” then said with a small smile, “He’ll never do that to anybody again.”
Gates said the experience pushed him to protect the next generation in his family. “I really broke generational curses with that situation because people that came before me, they was raped,” he explained. “I created the space for me to have with my children to where my children know, don’t nobody never touch you, not even me.”
He also shared how speaking out has connected him with other men. “Men have hugged me and cried in the gym,” Gates said. “I created a space. We built ourselves into machines to protect the inner child.”
