Basketball Wives Officially Cancelled After Shaunie O’Neal & VH1 Fail to Reach Deal
It’s officially the end of an era.
Media Take Out has confirmed that Basketball Wives — one of reality TV’s longest-running and most iconic franchises — has been cancelled for good.
After more than a decade on air, the show will not be returning for another season, and insiders say the decision came down to a failed business deal behind the scenes.
What Really Happened
According to multiple sources, the cancellation wasn’t about ratings or lack of interest. Instead, it came down to a dispute between VH1 and Shed Media, the production company behind the show.
We’re told that Shaunie O’Neal, along with Shed Media, was hoping to buy the rights to Basketball Wives from VH1 so they could take the franchise to another network or possibly a streaming platform.
In other words, Shaunie wanted to own it.
But negotiations broke down.
VH1 reportedly wanted more money than Shaunie and her team were willing to pay, and the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement. Rather than sell the show at a price they didn’t like, VH1 allegedly chose to cancel the series entirely.
And that decision has left a lot of people upset.
Hurt Feelings Behind the Scenes
Sources say there are major hurt feelings, especially among cast members and Shaunie herself, who believe the franchise should have been allowed to live on instead of being shelved.
Many of the women felt the show still had life, especially in the streaming era where reality content performs extremely well.
But VH1 owns the rights — and ultimately, they had the final say.

Shaunie O’Neal confirmed the cancellation herself on Instagram, writing:

While her message was classy and optimistic, insiders say the situation was far from smooth.

Basketball Wives premiered in 2010 and quickly became one of the most influential reality franchises ever, spawning multiple spin-offs and launching countless viral moments, careers, and catchphrases.
The show helped define an entire era of reality TV and made Shaunie one of the most powerful producers in the genre.
Now, with no deal in place and the rights locked up, the franchise is officially dead — at least for now.
