Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, a prominent northern leader and former political adviser to President Shehu Shagari, has denied being a member of a new political group called “The League of Northern Democrats”.
This comes after an online report by Punch Newspaper listed him as part of the group.
In a statement issued on August 21, 2024, Yakasai said that he has been receiving numerous calls and messages from concerned Nigerians regarding his alleged membership.
He clarified that he is not associated with the group in any way and urged the general public to disregard the report.
Yakasai, a respected figure in northern Nigeria, emphasized that he had not intended to respond to the report, but felt compelled to do so due to the overwhelming number of inquiries.
He signed off the statement with his title, “S.A. Tanko Yakasai OFR”, emphasizing his commitment to setting the record straight.
The denial has sparked interest, as the formation of new political groups ahead of the general elections is closely watched.
Yakasai’s statement has put to rest speculation about his involvement with “The League of Northern Democrats”, and his supporters have commended him for his prompt clarification.
